Near Side

English Saddle Near Side Parts Labeled

Note - theovergirth is not visible in this photo. The overgirth is a strap that attaches the flap on one side to the flap on the other, by running under the horse and laying over the actual girth. Overgirths are usually attached with an elastic piece allowing them to be loosened should the actual girth require tightening.

Correct billet placement is normally forward just behind the points of the tree. Billets placed too far back tend to push the saddle forward. Side saddles may have two or three billet straps on each side.

Point Billet Straps are usually found on the near side and are used to connect the balance strap. Point billets are occassionaly found on the off side and may be used to help stabilize the saddle if it moves forward even although the other billet placement is correct.
