Militar Bolacet Side Saddle from Stockholm, Sweden circa 1914.
This side saddle is a pre- World War II saddle built on a german side saddle tree in Stockholm Sweden by a maker of military saddles. The tree maker was prominent German saddlery G. Reinhardt. The tree maker was also a famous leather shop supplying wartime Germany throughout World War II.
This is an unusual saddle made for work on both the flat and over fences, though jumping is not recommended in it anymore. The seat is 22inches long by 12 1/2 inches wide in US measurements from the front of the fixed pommel to the cantle. The seat has lines like older Champion & Wilton side saddles.
The tree measures 7 1/2 inches in the gullet at the level of the D rings to the actual tree and 15" from point to moint making it a scant medium width saddle. The short point is somewhat longer than usual, offering increased support and less chance of rolling with the correct fit to the horse.
This fantastic side saddle has a pigskin seat and pommels and linen over serge panels. The linen and serge panels are new as are the billets, billet webbing and balance strap. The panels are properly flocked for a balanced ride.
The pommels are the medium style and very comfortable to ride. There are two positions for the leaping head to allow an upright seat with a long leg or a more forward position over fences. There is a convenience tab on the overgirth to allow easy access to the girth while mounted.
It has D rings for your breast collar and a small offside pocket for gloves, handkerchief, etc.
Note the large plug on the offside, covering a hole that (we believe) was originally used to screw in a handle that was held as the lady jumped in the saddle. This was during the period when ladies adopted an upright, fixed seat over fences. Extremely unusual and generally only found rarely on Continental side saddles.
The saddle has the flap shaped like a Champion & Wilton side saddle, but the stirrup leather attachment is a roller bar. The saddle comes with a newer stirrup leather and the original Cope's safety stirrup.
