Other News From Our Members

Anne Moss saw this book in the newspaper recently and thought it might be a good addition to the ISSO reading list. Or for us to potentially get Mimi Matthews to do an article on researching historical riding habits. We have reached out to Mimi and will let you know if she is interested!
Thanks Anne for the suggestion!

About the Book-- taken off Mimi's website.
What did a Victorian lady wear for a walk in the park? How did she style her hair for an evening at the theatre? And what products might she have used to soothe a sunburn or treat an unsightly blemish? Mimi Matthews answers these questions and more as she takes readers on a decade-by-decade journey through Victorian fashion and beauty history.
Women’s clothing changed dramatically during the course of the Victorian era. Necklines rose, waistlines dropped, and Gothic severity gave way to flounces, frills, and an abundance of trimmings. Sleeves ballooned up and skirts billowed out. The crinoline morphed into the bustle and steam-molded corsets cinched women’s waists ever tighter.
As fashion was evolving, so too were trends in ladies’ hair care and cosmetics. An era which began by prizing natural, barefaced beauty ended with women purchasing lip and cheek rouge, false hairpieces and pomades, and fashionable perfumes made with expensive spice oils and animal essences.
Using research from nineteenth century beauty books, fashion magazines, and ladies’ journals, Mimi Matthews brings the intricacies of a Victorian lady’s toilette into modern day focus. In the process, she gives readers a glimpse of the social issues that influenced women’s clothing and the societal outrage that was an all too frequent response to those bold females who used fashion and beauty as a means of asserting their individuality and independence.

The 2022 Washington Horse Expo Update and Photos by Pat Blaire
Oregon Ladies Aside and La Pena Charra Del Oeste did a joint side saddle presentation at this year’s March Expo. Under the auspices of The Mexican Federation of Charreria USA we are now partners in programs and performances that promote the art of riding aside. Our booth included displays of English, Mexican and Western saddles along with the riding apparel for each discipline.
The interactive display provided an opportunity for visitors to experience the elegance of wearing vintage costumes while sitting in both the western side saddle and the Albarda Charra saddle.

The Saturday Night Extravaganza is always the highlight of this Expo and our
Charros and Escaramuza team were a big hit!

Charro delegations from all parts of Washington and Oregon honored us with visits and help in the booth.

The Expo organizers loved our presentation and asked us to pose for publicity pictures with their mascot.

The Expo lasted three days and our booth was such a crowd favorite that we have been invited to return next year and will be given double the space

We received many invitations to do performances and exhibits through the rest of this year so stay tuned for more of our adventures!

Thank You Pat for this update on current happenings with our members!
